Palm Beach County Property Appraiser: Storm Preparedness 2012To ensure that everyone knows what to do in case of a major storm this season, Property Appraiser Gary Nikolits met Monday with his senior staff to review necessary steps to protect the employees.
Nikolits holds a Storm Preparedness meeting every June as Florida’s Hurricane Season begins.
He appointed emergency coordinators for each department within the Property Appraiser’s Office in the County Governmental Center at 301 N. Olive Ave., in downtown West Palm Beach. The PAO has offices on the 1st, 4th and 5th floors of the 12-story building along with four satellite locations in Palm Beach County.
“The actions we take in the event of a major storm threat to Palm Beach County will help reduce damage to office equipment and help in recovery efforts,” Nikolits said.
“We also ask that all personal items be removed from the offices and desks and taken home prior to a storm,” said Nikolits. “This is to ensure they are not damaged or lost in a storm.”
In the event of an emergency evacuation, the PAO coordinators double-check that floors are clear and no one remains in the building. The staff moves to an outdoor parking lot on 4th Street and Olive Avenue, where the coordinators will check off names to make sure everybody is safe and accounted for.
In 2004, Hurricane Frances did significant damage to the Property Appraiser’s Office, and the next year Hurricane Wilma did considerable damage to the county building itself.
“We have been lucky these last few years, and we certainly hope that weather pattern continues,” said Nikolits.
